Problem

paysafecard was founded in Austria in 2000 based on a relatively simple value proposition, to enable customers to shop or make payments online without using their bank account or credit card.  This was accomplished through a stored value PIN that could be purchased at a retail location and redeemed with an online merchant.

This prepaid innovation resonated with many Internet users who had concerns about exposing their personal and/or financial details when transacting online -- and the company grew.

By 2012, paysafecard was available at retail locations in 28 countries and was setting their sights on the Canadian market.  While their product was already established in Europe, there were challenges to starting all over again in a new country… especially one as large as Canada:

  • How to quickly and economically make their payment voucher conveniently available to Canadians coast to coast
  • How to make consumers aware of this new online payment option and where to get it
  • How to ensure retailers were trained in risk mitigation and proper selling processes of stored value PINs / vouchers

Solution

paysafecard partnered with Payment Source to launch their online payment solution in Canada.

paysafecard voucher sales were enabled on thousands of stand-alone terminals and thousands more point-of-sale systems via direct integration. Training materials and POP merchandising materials were developed and disseminated to all participating retail locations: the former ensuing a consistent and positive customer experience and the latter spreading awareness of this new online payment option.

Results

paysafecard vouchers are now purchased at thousands of locations across Canada from urban centres like Toronto, Ontario to remote communities like Kugluktuk, Nunavut - And the dollar value of voucher transactions has reached tens of millions.

But the story doesn’t end there.  As paysafecard evolved and with it the ways Canadians wanted to access this payment innovation, Payment Source continued to build new growth-driving solutions.  For Canadians who wanted access to paysafecard vouchers anywhere, anytime, Payment Source launched its online voucher distribution service, “Topmeup”.  And when Paysafe developed a new (voucherless) online payment method, “Paysafecash”, Payment Source provided them with a nationwide load network with QR code scanning capability.
